Series: Intro to Taming the Tongue

An Introduction to Tame the Tongue Series

Tame the tongue has taken me the longest to pen. Each week, I’ve realized it is something more I could add as I’ve become more and more conscious of my own tongue and it’s power.

Taming the tongue goes beyond being mindful of what is said, it’s also about what is consumed  or held within and how those things are outwardly or verbally expressed. And it has been difficult to pen something I’m currently working to improve. Yet, I am excited to share what I’ve been learning!

Tame the tongue will have to be broken into different parts, as everything that has come to me and to mind would take pages upon pages. So the “series” of “tame the tongue” will be based on this verse:

“but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God.”

‭‭James‬ ‭3:8-9‬ ‭ESV‬‬

In order to tame the tongue, the heart must be search and examined, the spirit must be renewed, and the eyes must have a credible lens which to make judgments and in turn, navigate life. I will be speaking on taming the tongue from the view points of wisdom, patience, surrender, spiritual health, renewal and diligence—as these are all keys that I’ve found in scripture that are essential to using the tongue to bless and speak life over being a poisonous and restless evil! One thing that I’ve been working on is asking myself is what I am sharing a representative of light and salt, is it necessary to even utter a joke if it’s laced with perceived malice, is it wise to share an opinion when it isn’t asked for?! These are all matters where taming the tongue calls for discernment.

I am so grateful that God has enlightened me and challenged me to change my approach and attitude, commit to the process of change, while using for more good than not, such a mighty gift as the tongue.
